The divine aesthetic derived from the buddhist teaching of the three marks of existence
impermanence suffering and absence of self nature...
the general characteristics of wabi sabi aesthetics and principles include asymmetry, roughness, raw, simplicity, modesty ,intimacy ad appreciation of natural objects and the forces of nature....
it was only about 6 years ago when a friend uttered the words as he glanced at the beginnings of my recycled Jarrah gallery construction..Once i read a little i realised so many parts of my life and work align unknowingly with the wabi sabi concepts , its been a re assuring find ...
Characteristics like splits or rot holes i wood appear as wonderful and actually create the beauty dry sticks, the certain days of the year when the sun hits a certain part of the gallery and just makes it glow briefly , weathered wood that is too hard for white ants or theyve eaten what they can and leave you with perfectly clean burl or pieces of tuart..
It can also i find leads to a slight confusion , or the need to explain to some people that its these characteristics that provide inner peace and enlightenment far beyond words or language .
blending straight lines and millimetre perfect measurements in furniture making with natural form and flow can get frustrating as i find i get easily distracted and drawn to natural form when im trying to create straight lines ...you have to enjoy your dilemma that you create i your head or you just stare at timber or a space for days, even years procrastinating :)
and the " It will look great when its finished " quote i hear from some people about my gallery sculpture park, everyone has their idea of beautiful and thats the beauty of life ....i just dont understand what a " finished " park /natural space looks like because its that alive and flourishing with natural elements ...Im looking forward to opening the park/gallery at night because with simple lighting and shadows ....Sculpture becomes almost theatre
