I am a Western Australian artist whose practice spans more than five decades, grounded in a deep connection to the Australian landscape. Working across painting, sculpture, furniture, and photography, my work reflects a lifetime of observation, craftsmanship, and exploration of form. I endeavour to produce a distinctive style within my artwork, focusing on textured surfaces and earthy palettes.
Living and working in Yallingup, I draw continual inspiration from the coastal environment and surrounding bushland. My works tend not to be literal depictions, but rather figurative and stylised - representing various aspects of the natural landscape, often including a gentle human presence. This vision has been inspired not only by the region, but also from my travels and experiences overseas.
My career as a furniture maker has significantly informed my artistic approach. Through my founding of Design Wood in 1980, I developed a philosophy that bridges art and function - where structure and artistic form are of equal value. When selecting the materials or mediums of my work, I often consider their strengths as well as their limitations.
In 1987, I designed and built Gunyulgup Galleries (now Yallingup Galleries), establishing a lasting platform (with my wife), which displayed the works of regional and national artists. My later creation of the Water Garden Art Studio further extended this vision, focusing on temporary exhibitions set within a natural landscape.
My work has been purchased for private and institutional collections across Australia and internationally, which has been gratifying and humbling in equal measure. Throughout my career, I have remained committed to evolving my practice so that it continues to honour the Australian environment while continually pushing the boundaries of material and form.
At its core, my work is an exploration of the relationship between identity and place.
