With a background of working in steel for over 45 years and gaining inspiration from the shapes found within nature, Wayne Smith’s corten steel sculptures display a natural, organic flow that sit beautifully in their surroundings.
Along with the organic looping and twisting shapes that a recurring theme found in his artworks, Wayne’s sculptures have seen a more structured, yet abstract, geometric leaning over the last year, with striking angles and intricate twists in the steel showcasing how light and shadow forms an important aspect of his work.
You will also find more stylized, natural forms by way of bird life and plants hiding away in the sculpture garden that Wayne shares with wife and artist Julie Ann Smith. (Also showcasing her paintings, ceramics and textiles in the Open Studio event).
… I enjoy the complexity and challenge of working with weathering steel. How to bend and shape it into forms inspired by the curves found in nature. I would like my works to display a sense of movement, with the surface smooth and inviting to the touch. To me, it is important the viewer sees or feels the ‘hand of the artist’ in each of my sculptures. Each piece of steel is hand cut, hand rolled, hand welded, and then hand ground to smooth the joins. Every artwork is unique…
