Heidi Emma is an oil painter based in the Margaret River Region of Western Australia, whose work captures the quiet beauty of everyday scenes through still life and landscape. Drawing inspiration from local beaches, walk tracks and familiar places—some recognised only by those who call the region home—her paintings invite viewers to pause and reconnect with moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Working in oils, Heidi has developed a distinctive approach that challenges traditional expectations of the medium. Her paintings are known for their lightness and restraint—layered with soft, tonal shifts and a considered use of colour that creates a sense of calm. With a focus on tonal impressionism, her work balances realism and painterliness: forms resolve from a distance, while up close, expressive brushwork and texture bring each piece to life.
Light and contrast sit at the heart of her practice. Whether capturing sunlight spilling across a table or illuminating the contours of a coastal landscape, Heidi is drawn to the way light defines atmosphere and evokes feeling. Her still life compositions often feature collected glassware and ceramics paired with Australian native flora, where reflective surfaces and organic forms interact in quiet, thoughtful arrangements.
Her practice continues to evolve, with a renewed focus on revisiting earlier subjects and expanding a growing catalogue of local scenes. These works reflect both a deepening familiarity with place and a desire to capture it with fresh perspective and sensitivity.
During Margaret River Open Studios, Heidi exhibits alongside Stephanie Stokes Pottery, where she paints regularly within the shared studio space. This creative environment offers visitors a layered experience of art and making, where painting and ceramics exist in conversation. The influence of handcrafted vessels is evident in Heidi’s still life work, often incorporating pieces from the studio into her compositions. Visitors can expect a diverse collection, from original oil paintings to prints and giftware. This year also marks the release of Heidi’s first collection of ceramic objects, created to complement the quiet rituals of everyday life.
For Heidi, one of the most meaningful aspects of sharing her work is witnessing the personal connections it evokes. A memory connected to place or the simple arrangement of objects can stir something deeply individual.
