Describe your experienceEstablished
Artist Statement for the Website

Open Studios is my opportunity to talk to the people who are specifically interested in pottery or ceramics and during the event, to connect with visiting potters, ceramicists and enthusiasts. It shows how strong our industry is.
For the last few years I'm really enjoying teaching my skills to other people. The interaction, after years of not having social contact, either working in my studio or as an apiarist is stimulating.
The lesson experiences which I’m thoroughly enjoying providing, are about people sharing time with their friends and family, being connected, having a laugh and creating something … in that order. I love watching people as they go from being all thumbs to getting close to centring, and then marvelling at what they have formed! It’s their work and they are chuffed with it. It’s not only the experience of the moment, when they receive their pots, they are reminded of their holiday or time together every time they look at it or hopefully, proudly use it!
With the increased interest in pottery in the community, I’ve enjoyed mentoring trainees and giving access to our studio to young people as well as those who are seeking some guidance. They bring enthusiasm and freshness, and try new things that I can help with technical advice and it encourages me to think further outside the box. This might be a few days of throwing practice and I provide tips as they go. It doesn’t cost anything but time on a wheel and they can grow from the experience.
In 2023 I spent time reflecting on glaze technology as I completed a course, and have come out the other side a lot more confident about what I’m doing as a chemist, though still observing how much more experimenting there is to go. It is always thrilling to open a kiln and see what tests look like. Thankfully, it more often a positive experience than not, and the feeling of anticipation hasn’t dissipated yet.
This Open Studios there will be old favourites, now classic and collectible, and a variety of pots in a wide range of these new glazes. Alongside our lesson experiences on offer, I hope to do offer a few evening master classes for intermediate or higher level potters.

Artist Statement for the Event Guide

Myles is a master potter having worked in the industry for over 35 years. Expect to see a year's worth of exciting new glaze across some new shaped mugs. Workshops available, please book online.

Studio Details

Briefly describe your studio space (is it in your home, shed, farm etc, is it filled with light, is it tiny or cavernous?) & can you provide a taste of what visitors will see and experience there?

We have a production pottery which features rolling racks heaped with a menagerie of pottery in various stages. Raw pots by our various potters, bisque pots for orders and our gallery, lesson pieces, glazed pots and just fired pots. Large pots to beginner pots, and everything in between.
There are two very large trolley kilns, a small gas kiln and a couple in between. The building is a work in progress, made of jarrah, tin roof and houses the glazing area, lesson room, drying cupboards, and storage. It has history as well as character and we try not to let it get too dusty!
We have an area for our pottery experiences. The main goal of the experiences is to have fun, make connections and if you are lucky, a choice of objects that you might take home after we have fired them.
I will be doing some master classes and our everyday lesson experiences. Jacquie can give you a tour around if I'm not available.
We also have a honey shop – the first in the district, and you can taste our honeys that come from the iconic West Australian landscape. We even have a live beehive in the shop! If I'm not in the pottery, I'll be in the field.

Describe the kind of interactive experience you may provide to visitors. E.g. are you demonstrating your art practice?

We are a production pottery studio, so there is always a process from glazing, throwing, firing or trimming. We have several potters around who may be on site to talk to as well. I have a room full of test tiles from 2023... some will should be on the shelves of the gallery if all goes well.

We are happy to show people around the studio and what we do everyday. If we can give tips we will!
