Artist Statement for the Website

I'm Asha Altmann, an artist raised in Margaret River. With a palette that spans watercolour, gouache, acrylics, and any medium that ignites my creativity, I strive to evoke gratitude and a profound connection to the Earth through my art.

Navigating the challenges of dyslexia from childhood into adulthood, I discovered that my true voice emerged not through words but through the vibrant language of nature, beautifully expressed in my artwork.

My love affair with art has been lifelong, but it was in 2017 that I embarked on a transformative journey, enrolling in a Visual Arts Certificate at TAFE in Margaret River under the guidance of remarkable mentors Kay Gibson and Dea Haddow. Here, I honed my craft, earning Certificates 3 and 4 in Visual Arts, recognised with the Highest Achievement Award and Certificate of Excellence for both.

Exploring the raw beauty of Western Australia's coastline on a series of immersive road trips profoundly influenced my artistic style and gave birth to AshaLoo, a visual diary of my adventures and experiences.

Immersing myself in the technique of 'En Plein Air' while traveling allows me to chase the sun along the coast, capturing diverse perspectives and animals with watercolour, my medium of choice. I embrace its fluidity, merging intricate natural patterns and details as I become one with my surroundings.

Returning home from my journeys, I find fresh inspiration in the landscapes of Margaret River I grow up in, rediscovering its beauty with a newfound appreciation. The contrast between the crystal blue waters of the Ningaloo Reef paired with the rugged red desert plains sets such a stunning contrast to my southern home with its towering, gigantic Karri trees and rolling green hills.

Every artwork I create is a manifestation my artistic spirit, a tangible expression of my experiences and a snapshot of nature through my eyes. I invite viewers to connect with their own stories, finding resonance in my journey.

Studio Details

Briefly describe your studio space (is it in your home, shed, farm etc, is it filled with light, is it tiny or cavernous?) & can you provide a taste of what visitors will see and experience there?

Step into my studio through a beautiful garden pathway, where the doors open to reveal a hallway adorned with original artworks from my travels, offering a glimpse into the beauty of distant lands. As you gaze out, the valley unfolds before you, providing a serene backdrop to the artistic journey that awaits. Within the spacious studio, natural light dances upon a collection of mesmerising watercolour paintings, each capturing the allure of Western Australia's coastline. From tranquil shores to vibrant forest, every brushstroke invites you to explore the coastal wonders of this captivating region. Welcome to a sanctuary where artistry flourishes and the beauty of nature is celebrated.

Describe the kind of interactive experience you may provide to visitors. E.g. are you demonstrating your art practice?

Here, amidst the tools of my trade and the gentle hum of inspiration, I invite you to witness the magic of my artistic expression. Where watercolour painting takes center stage, join me as I delve into the process of capturing the beauty of Western Australia's coastal landscapes and animals, blending colours and details to evoke an essence of gratitude for the earth. Step into a realm where creativity flows freely and each brushstroke tells a story.
