Describe your experienceEstablished
Artist Statement for the Website

My passion for the natural environment and the great outdoors is insatiable and it is where my soul finds solace. Whether camping under the stars, strolling along the ocean’s edge or wandering through the depths of the forest, I find myself continually awestruck by nature’s magnificence. The confines of indoor spaces can be suffocating; I am driven to distraction if I am stuck indoors for too long. So, my artistic journey is a perpetual exploration and celebration of nature’s wonders and a quest to capture its beauty and bring it indoors.

You’ll often find me painting en plein air in scenically inspiring locations. I am also drawn to capturing fleeting moments with my camera, gathering inspiration for later works in my studio. Countless hours are spent sitting on the beach or on the coastal rocks and cliffs attempting to capture the most interesting wave, or hiding out somewhere trying to snap my favourite birds going about their day. Immersion in nature is integral to my well being and creative process.

My paintings transcend mere depictions of the physical scene; I strive to convey the emotional and spiritual connection I have to the natural world, it’s beauty and complexity rather than just the application of the paint. Each brushstroke I make is with the aim of honouring nature’s beauty and complexity, striving to capture the nuances of light and form. Through my art, I hope to transport the viewer into the heart of my paintings, inviting them to share in the awe-inspiring moments I have experienced first-hand, so they feel like they are there with me; in the landscapes or seascape, ready to dive into the ocean, or sitting with me watching the birds. I seek to evoke a sense of presence, inviting viewers to join me in the communion with the natural world.

Artist Statement for the Event Guide

As a lover of the great outdoors, my subject matter is nature, especially water and coastal themes. I aim to bring a piece of the beautiful outdoors, indoors. Working in oils and acrylics but also with pastels and watercolour. Join me for a Painting Waves Workshop on Wednesday 13 September in Busselton – see artoutdoorswa.com.au/events for full details.

Studio Details

Briefly describe your studio space (is it in your home, shed, farm etc, is it filled with light, is it tiny or cavernous?) & can you provide a taste of what visitors will see and experience there?

I have been invited to display my work during the Margaret River Region Open Studios at the heritage listed Old Courthouse Complex in the ArtGeo cultural precinct, 4 Queen Street, Busselton. The Old Courthouse Complex was built in the 1860s and played an important role in Busselton’s settlement history. In recent time it has evolved into a community hub for arts and cultural experiences. You can wander through the old Courtrooms, Magistrates Room, Bond Store, Police Station, Gaol Cells and Exercise Yard. Explore the history of the Old Courthouse and see several artists who will be displaying their work here during Margaret River Region Open Studios.

During the open studios period, the Old Courthouse Complex will be open from 10am to 4pm every day except Wednesdays. I work from my home in Wonnerup, just outside Busselton (my studio space not suitable to open to the public). During the year, I have hosted several workshops at the Fodder Room in the Old Courthouse Complex and I also have studio space that I use when she I am visiting Perth located at the National Trust’s Settlers Cottage in Churchlands (known as Settlers Art Studios).

Describe the kind of interactive experience you may provide to visitors. E.g. are you demonstrating your art practice?

On Wednesday 11 September, I will be hosting a Painting Waves Workshop at the Fodder Room at the Old Courthouse Complex in Busselton. Tickets for this event will be on sale via my workshop website (head to the events page) https://www.artoutdoorswa.com.au/events

If yes – who are you sharing with?I am not sure - I've been invited to hire space at the Old Courthouse Complex in Busselton. I will have my own area/room there but there will be other artists in the complex.
