Artist Statement for the Website

Gerry Reilly's creative genius is well known throughout Australia, both through his brilliant free-formed art glass and the generosity he brings in sharing his practice through his Melting Pot Glass Studio for the past 35 years in Margaret River.
His highly skilled craftsmanship, brilliantly coloured and handcrafted art glass features his sought-after landscape forms, and ever popular accessible stemless glasses and tableware, hanging baubles and unique sculptures and lighting installations.
The warm friendly welcome at the studio brings connection and inspiration to all who visit. Watch a demo, book in for a glassmaking experience, shop from his studio displays, and wander in the ambient surrounds, with friendly dogs, atop the kangaroo-filled valley, above the Margaret River.
Based on their home property, 5 mins from Margaret River, Gerry and his partner Margot and son Ned, bring everyone an unforgettable taste of the glassblower's world in and around his studio, and the chance to take home a precious piece of Western Australian art glass and a treasured memory of Margaret River creatives at their home-grown best.

Artist Statement for the Event Guide

Be thrilled by alchemist Gerry Reilly working molten glass into his vibrant evocative designs. Connect and wonder, choose or wander.

Studio Details

Briefly describe your studio space (is it in your home, shed, farm etc, is it filled with light, is it tiny or cavernous?) & can you provide a taste of what visitors will see and experience there?

Our shed-studio sits amidst our 1920s Margaret River farmhouses, continually undergoing renovation, with rambling gardens between and around the various artist residences, central fig tree, and marri forest block behind. The hilltop aspect offers far reaching views of forested hilltops looking north, and kangaroos throughout the valley. We have lived on the property as a family for 32 years and purchased the whole hilltop farm settlement in 2014 when the area was subdivided. The studio has standing room for up to 15 people, an off-the-shelf shop and adjacent outdoor displays packed with colourful glassware for sale.

Describe the kind of interactive experience you may provide to visitors. E.g. are you demonstrating your art practice?

We'll be open 12-6pm Sat, Sun, Mon, Tues, Wed; closed Thur, Fri during both weeks of MRROS 2024.
In the mornings 10am-12noon, we'll be offering private Blow Your Own Bauble and Create Your Own Winecup glassmaking experiences, which can be booked on our website meltingpotglass.com/workshops
In the afternoon-evening from 12-6pm, we'll be open to all, offering free glassblowing demonstrations by Gerry Reilly and/or Ned Reilly. You can watch the hot glass demonstrations, ask questions, take photos - its fun and fascinating.
When its busy, people rotate between the studio, the verandah shop and the Zani gardens.
Please ring for appointment with Gerry, if you are wanting to discuss commissioning customised artworks.

Are you sharing a studio with another artist? No

MARKETING AND PUBLICITY

The next section helps our marketing contractors get to know more about you and helps them in promoting your studio.. If you do not wish to participate in PR and marketing opportunities, you can skip to the next section.
Do you have any relatives or close friends also participating in MRROS this year? If so can you please name them? (So we can potentially group you for stories)

IAN DOWLING (if he's participating) ... certainly in relation to ceramics but mostly the numerous parallels of when and to where we've moved studios over the arc of our creative journeys, and how we've both evolved our art practice to suit the spaces and places we've created to work in. As an open studio event, this particular parallel story of two prominent established Margaret River artists has never been recorded and could be very relevant and interesting to share.

FI WILKIE ... old friends, but particularly as we are both artists who've run interactive creative workshops very successfully from our home studios for many years.

STEVE PEASE (if he's participating) ... used to have his jewellery studio built into our Boodjidup Rd studio. We have been close friends ever since and contemporaries as prominent WA designer-makers. We both have incorporated high level commissioned awards and corporate gifts into our practice and some of these works have been iconic in their role as highly-crafted presentation pieces, including for international government protocol gifts and high level sporting awards, much treasured by those receiving them.

Do you have any professional photos or video of you in action or your work in addition to what has been supplied for the catalogue? Please email them to marketing@mrros.com.auYes
