Artist Statement for the Website

I’m a mid career artist working mainly in textiles, mixed media and printmaking, utilizing where ever possible, offcuts, scraps, recycled clothing and other by-products to create something interesting and thought provoking. Eco and indigo dyeing have appealed to me as a truly alchemical process. I marvel how nature and other invisible variables intervene and thwart attempts to reproduce a piece, despite meticulous planning.
It is found objects which bring me most joy and inspiration: scraps of cloth found at the roadside, bits of wool stuck on fences, small bones, rusty tools, seaweed, which tell stories of a past existence. Sometimes I sew pieces of cloth together to make a wrap or garment. Other times I print, sew and collage these fragments to tell an alternative story. The narrative is endless with threads and lines weaving their stories through my work.
I’ve also always been intrigued by seemingly small and insignificant creatures such as insects and crustaceans and the phenomenal part they play in our existence. I am very conscious of the materials I choose to work with and the impact they have on these small creatures both in the manufacturing, creative and disposal processes. As an avid beekeeper I utilise the by-product of the honey harvest and make my own wax encaustic paints and mediums. Not only is this a wonderful medium to work with but smells amazing and I get bee visits while I work.
In addition, being a lifelong coastal dweller heavily influences my art practice and I’m frequently immersed in the ocean; observing, feeling, allowing myself to be carried along on a rhythmic journey of swell, swimming and currents. As a Scottish Highlander I am intuitively drawn to Celtic cultural symbolism in relation to the land and ocean. My name “Rona” is The Selkie, so I’m attached to the sea by birth!

Studio Details

Briefly describe your studio space (is it in your home, shed, farm etc, is it filled with light, is it tiny or cavernous?) & can you provide a taste of what visitors will see and experience there?

My studio is part of my house, tucked away in the whisper quiet, Wilderness area of Margaret River. Originally my studio functioned as the spare bedroom and my daughter’s room. After may years of working on the dining room table and having art "stuff" all over the house, my long-suffering family agreed to the demolition of the wall between the two rooms and my studio was created. It is a homely space with views of towering jarrah and marris and a small army of ancient grass trees right on the door step. While not huge, the space is airy and light and can accommodate 10 people at a time (after I have relocated my etching press to the veranda for the duration!)

Describe the kind of interactive experience you may provide to visitors. E.g. are you demonstrating your art practice?

Unfortunately, I am unable to actively demonstrate my wax encaustic art process. Due to this process requiring "Hot Wax" work with hotplates and molten wax paint, for safety reasons it is not practical to have a live demonstration in my space due to its size. I will be working on textile pieces and smaller prints throughout the open studios period which can be observed.

Are you sharing a studio with another artist? No
If your studio is difficult to find please list directions below. Also please note if your address is not correctly displayed on Google Maps.

My studio is tucked out of the way a bit. However Google Maps has been very reliable in the past. When arriving at 18 Terry Drive, take the left fork in the gravel drive up the hill and the studio is perched at the top.
