Artist Statement for the Website

With grass roots in the West Australian wheatbelt, Julie-Ann's interest in painting began after a move to Perth to take up tertiary studies in Art and Design. Two decades later, following a career in graphic design and advertising, she began her painting practice in Contemporary Realism.
With every piece her ultimate goal is to capture the 'essence of a moment' which can often be fleeting but resonating; an intrinsic appropriation of her subject matter.
Julie-Ann aspires to provoke an emotional connection with her audience.
A fascination for the effects of light on her subject forms the inspiration of her work setting in motion the concept that begins her creative process. In the case of portraiture, she is motivated to convey expression and feeling; a sense of the subjects’ state of mind at the time in order to create curiosity and engagement with the paintings’ audience. Similarly with painting nature, she attempts to embrace her audience by creating an impression; evoking a feeling of contentment and desire.
Enchanted by the rich, buttery texture of oil paint meant she had found at her chosen medium although this does not limit her willingness to express herself through alternative mediums according to what application is most appropriate to each artwork. A love of charcoal allows a brief whimsical prelude to oil paint forming the paintings base.
Each piece is crafted over a significant amount of time, often many sessions, necessary to achieve fine detail and allowing her to review progress and consider alternate ways forward, evolving her original concept. Her style is interpretive; contemporary realism permeated by the subtle use of texture and tempered brushstoke; not so real as to be mistaken for photography.
Julie-Ann painted out of Pakenham Street Artist Studios (PSAS) in Fremantle for two years which lead to a second successful solo exhibition. She exhibits widely in group shows where she has received a number of awards and commendations, most notably a finalist in the Lester Prize (WA), Kilgour Prize (NSW) for portraiture and Kennedy Art Prize (SA).
Julie-Ann has now settled on a beautiful, forested property near Margaret River where in the last 12 months she has completed building her new art studio.

Artist Statement for the Event Guide

Capturing the 'essence of a moment' Julie-Ann paints predominantly Contemporary Realism. Portraits and images inspired by nature form the subject matter of her oil painting practice.
She also paints watery images in her own interpretation of Abstract Impressionism.

Studio Details

Briefly describe your studio space (is it in your home, shed, farm etc, is it filled with light, is it tiny or cavernous?) & can you provide a taste of what visitors will see and experience there?

This year Julie-Ann is excited to invite the pubic to her new purpose-built Artist Studio.
Elevated and bathed in morning light with a wall of glass overlooking beautiful, natural forest Freshwater Studio provides a fantastic setting for inspiration and creativity.
The Studio is where all the work is done and where she hopes to host classes once fully established. Easels containing works in progress are set up (working best with more than one painting in progress simultaneously) surrounded by all the tools of the trade; shelves brimming with jars of brushes, paint tubes, pots and bottles of various art aides along with art books and sketchbooks. A desk with laptops and extra screens handle the business side of her practice.
The Studio is adjacent to a hall, the ‘Gallery’, where finished pieces are exhibited. Some pieces are personal, particularly portraiture and are not for sale, however there will be pieces for sale during events like Open Studios. She believes people better appreciate finished artworks away from the clutter of a working studio where they may visualise the piece in a home environment.

Describe the kind of interactive experience you may provide to visitors. E.g. are you demonstrating your art practice?

After a 15 year career in graphic design and advertising and with the kids at school in the late 2000s the opportunity came about to make a change. Dabbling in various mediums and community art courses Julie-Ann discovered Oil Painting and a wonderful Mentor.
In addition to her initial focus on Contemporary Realism she has, over time developed her unique style of Abstract Expressionism involving water as her subject matter. A good example of this has been painted on 20 square metres of water tank near her studio.
Five years ago Julie-Ann took a foray into portraiture which has led to regular commission requests.
She has deep admiration for Impressionism and has plans to develop her skills in that style. Not willing to categorise her work as a whole in any specific genre Julie-Ann believes her art is a journey that will continue to evolve.
