Describe your experienceEmerging
Artist Statement for the Website

I am a Dunsborough artist with a passion for the south west environment. I paint, draw, create ceramics,
dye silk, make sculptures from wire and baskets from rope. Inspired by the natural environment, my
practice is meditative as well as exploratory and reflects the meanderings of my mind.

My artworks reflect my love of our unique coastal environment. I aim to share the peace that I find in
nature as well as in the act of creating, using saturated colour and organic shapes to manifest patterns and
visual rhythms. The ocean is my solace, imbedded in my soul. I spend much of my free time walking by the
sea, sailing upon it, swimming and watching the play of light on water. During these tumultuous times, I
find catharsis within the creation of my art which also reflects the emotions I have experienced as I work. I
also dabble in bush themes, occasional surrealism and still life work.

Travelling and exploring various cultures across the globe as well as amazing galleries and cities like
Barcelona, London, Paris and Singapore have played a large part in expanding my mind artistically. One of
my great joys comes from learning new approaches to visual communication and developing new skills
through playful exploration. I am currently revelling in a sabbatical year in order to explore my personal
artistic development. I studied secondary art teaching at Edith Cowan University just over 30 years ago
during which time I participated in a cultural exchange to study textiles in Indonesia. My love of South East
Asia continues today, having had journeys to Singapore and Sri Lanka already this year.

It has been a privilege to hold a solo exhibition in June and July 2024 at the Old Courthouse Complex in
Busselton. This year is my fourth venture into MRROS. My work is regularly seen in local exhibitions.
Beginning my art practice as a secondary student with inspirational teachers, I eventually studied art
teaching. I have been working in this field as a secondary educator and private art facilitator as well as
producing my own work over three decades. It’s my passion and delight.

I am very excited to be entering Margaret River Open Studios again this year.

Artist Statement for the Event Guide

My colourful, uplifting artworks reflect my love of our unique coastal environment. Bright colours and varied techniques show through my exploratory, meditative practice.

Studio Details

Briefly describe your studio space (is it in your home, shed, farm etc, is it filled with light, is it tiny or cavernous?) & can you provide a taste of what visitors will see and experience there?

Nestled in a modern block of industrial units just past the vet on Clark Street in central Dunsborough, my art studio is hidden upstairs and normally only open by appointment. This is my sanctuary, my sacred space where I create visual magic. The art lined stairway opens into a brightly lit, unexpectedly spacious large room. The gallery area is full of bright paintings. Under these, velvet lined tables showcase drawings, shell imprinted ceramic bowls and embellished rope baskets. Along the far wall is a display of stunning shibori silk scarves and shawls which are also available in gift boxes. A central display showcases more artworks. Digital prints of my work are displayed between the scarves and shelves that hold my art materials and books. A comfy lounge and chairs await weary legs opposite these shelves. My work table stretches between these towards the front floor to ceiling windows and a sliding door opens onto a small balcony. More paintings are displayed on easels and the table. Behind the lounge is a carved screen where I hang more art. Quiet music will be playing as I welcome you into my world.

Describe the kind of interactive experience you may provide to visitors. E.g. are you demonstrating your art practice?

I will be working on various art projects as visitors come through my studio. You will see the materials I use as you wander through. I enjoy a chat, sharing my journey as well as technical tips, My studio is a friendly, welcoming space where guests are welcome to sit for a while and enjoy the colourful and inspirational ambience.

MARKETING AND PUBLICITY

The next section helps our marketing contractors get to know more about you and helps them in promoting your studio.. If you do not wish to participate in PR and marketing opportunities, you can skip to the next section.
Do you have any relatives or close friends also participating in MRROS this year? If so can you please name them? (So we can potentially group you for stories)

Not sure if all these people are applying this year... can you please double check this for me?

Adam Ashdown - he is a close family friend who has encouraged and supported me through my prior MRROS experiences, helping me understand how to approach the event.

Jacqui Happ - I have known Jacqui for as long as I have lived here. She has supported my art career every step of the way and is an absolute legend.

Sarah Malone - art teacher (we ocassionally collaborate professionally as I work at Busselton SHS, she is at Cape Naturaliste College) along with Lara Karpeljuk who has supplied us both with art materials through Jacksons for many years.

Sandy Winkle - childhood friend - we attended the same high school, have supported each other through some significant times in life and have a parallel art journey in many ways.

Sue Churack, Jill Jardine - were my adult students a few years ago. They tell me that my classes kick started them to where they are today. It's wonderful to see them embarking on MRROS this year.

Lyn Ward - we both taught on Cocos keeling Islands and have developed a friendship from that as well as encouraging and admiring each other artistically.

Colin Pratt - I worked with Colin at Busselton SHS back in the day - he has always been encouraging.

There are, no doubt, many more - my community is one of nurturing souls who are connected in so very many ways. It's heartwarming to belong.

Do you have any professional photos or video of you in action or your work in addition to what has been supplied for the catalogue? Please email them to marketing@mrros.com.auNo
