Artist Statement for the Website

Nari grew up on land, in regional & remote Western Australia. As a direct result, she has a deep reverence for patterns in nature & cycles of life, death & rebirth. Choosing to become an Occupational Therapist she has searched for best ways of being with others through their periods of deep & seemingly impossible challenge, while also honourably dealing with her own life transitions. She is passionate about the ways that these often painful times of transition become creative opportunities for growth & healing. We can rediscover our humanness, grow our creative capacities, & truly heal our lives.

In her mid 50's, having completed post graduate studies in Integral Wholeness Facilitation, Nari continues this empowering work alongside individuals & groups, while practicing her own art. She was a contributing member of Margaret River Artisans for a number of years & more recently became involved in a social art project - co-creating & facilitating with colleagues & community leaders, a public meditative & healing place in Western Australia - Bunbury Garden Labyrinth. With Nari serving as Chairperson & Secretary, the successful project was nominated for the City of Bunbury Australia Day Citizen of the Year Awards, in the Community Groups/Events category.

Nari will continue to enjoy the challenge of balancing artful, solitary time with engagement in community work. As a therapist, she is well aware that artworks have the potential to transform our home & work spaces, having the power to shape how we feel, think and construct reality. Further to this, especially at times of transition, when we are rendered incapable of expressing the ineffable, an artwork can often convey something beyond the words and the obvious.

Artist Statement for the Event Guide

Nari is a Social Artist, passionate about exploring times of transition, as creative opportunities for growth & healing. She balances her own art practice with community work.

Studio Details

Briefly describe your studio space (is it in your home, shed, farm etc, is it filled with light, is it tiny or cavernous?) & can you provide a taste of what visitors will see and experience there?

My home studio is nestled on the edge of a beautiful Wilyabrup Valley, facing towards the ocean. I splash paint around messily in my cave-like shed & then bring the artworks up into my light-filled Studio/House for further refining and detailing. I also create labyrinths, spirals & mandalas on the earth, with found objects. Visitors will experience a sense of the reverence of nature & expansive space, as they explore both inside & out. The National Trust & Land for Wildlife have also recognised the value of this wilderness valley & listed it for conservation, which I just love.

Describe the kind of interactive experience you may provide to visitors. E.g. are you demonstrating your art practice?

I will be working on artworks throughout Open Studios, so visitors will get to witness this. There will also be the opportunity to share intimate conversations on what drives my practice, which is definitely contemplative in nature. With a career as an Occupational Therapist & Integral Wholeness Facilitator I am interested in creativity & mindfulness as pathways to Wellness & Healing. I will also be offering a couple of events where visitors can come and share a guided walk of a labyrinth, followed by a brief talk on its application in the modern world.

Are you sharing a studio with another artist? No

MARKETING AND PUBLICITY

The next section helps our marketing contractors get to know more about you and helps them in promoting your studio.. If you do not wish to participate in PR and marketing opportunities, you can skip to the next section.
Do you have any relatives or close friends also participating in MRROS this year? If so can you please name them? (So we can potentially group you for stories)

I used to be in the MR Artisans (as Treasurer) so am familiar with a lot of those artists of 10-15 years ago. I've been invited this year to collab with Christian Fletcher, but otherwise my art practice itself is intentionally quite solitary.

Do you have any professional photos or video of you in action or your work in addition to what has been supplied for the catalogue? Please email them to marketing@mrros.com.auNo
