As part of the South West Japan Festival, join me in my Margaret River studio to hand build a rock-like ceramic suiban (A wide and shallow Japanese water tray).
Cost: $130 A suiban is traditional wide and shallow Japanese water tray, usually used for ikebana – flower arranging – as well as for displaying suiseki – viewing stones.
In this 2 hour workshop you will learn and practice the coil building technique and how to include locally sourced crushed granite into the outer surface of the suiban.
Participants are asked to bring along a small collected rock, so they can view this while they create. When the suiban is complete the rock will be displayed as a viewing stone.
The suiban will be made from stoneware clay and high-fired to cone 9.
I will complete the drying, glazing and firing of your suibans ready for you to pick up in a few weeks time, or alternatively to be posted to you for an extra shipping fee.
