I’m Michelle Miller, a silk artist based in Cowaramup in Western Australia’s Southwest and the principal artist behind Rivers of Silk. I was born in Kojonup and grew up in Perth, and I’ve lived and worked in this region for nearly 40 years. Even after all this time, I continue to be inspired by the ever-changing landscape, the colours of the natural environment, and the creative spirit of the local community.
I have worked exclusively with silk for nearly 29 years, developing and refining a wide range of silk painting techniques. My work explores colour, movement and the unique expressive qualities of silk, resulting in both collectible artworks and wearable pieces. For over 15 years my work was represented at Aspects at Kings Park, and I have regularly participated in the original Margaret River Artisans collective exhibitions, where I was a member for 20 years. I also work to commission, with projects including unique pieces for bridal and personal mementos.
Sharing creativity is an important part of my practice. At Rivers of Silk, I offer workshops that invite people to slow down, experiment with colour and rediscover their creative confidence. I aim to create a gentle, supportive space where everyone—regardless of experience—can enjoy the beauty and joy of working with silk.
My original degree was as an Art Educator and have developed a professional profile as a career practitioner where I engage in counselling and coaching of individuals to find their creative and true selves and engage in an authentic career journey. My experiences in the art space allow the gentle exploration of self-talk and the development of creative confidence.
I am currently exploring a deeper understanding of the marine environment and the textures and colours of the magnificent world beneath the waves. I invite you to visit the studio and enjoy the journey of creation and creative interpretation into precious silks.
