Julie Ann Smith is a multidisciplinary artist with over 30 years of creative exploration of textiles (with a focus on felting), both sculptural and functional ceramics, and acrylic and mixed media painting. Her artistic inspiration is deeply rooted in the dramatic landscapes of Western Australia's Pilbara and Kimberley regions, particularly the rich ochre hues and diverse textures found within these ancient lands. The vibrant colours and delicate forms of the flowers in her home garden also provide a constant source of inspiration. The multiple rock formations, with their distinct layers and textures, found throughout the gorges and mountains of the Northwest, consistently ignite her creative passion and are a recurring motif in her diverse artistic output.
Julie's serene and quiet home studio, nestled within her garden, serves as the sanctuary where her artistic visions come to life. The influence of the surrounding natural environment is palpable in her work. She has exhibited extensively, most recently participating in Sculptures by the Bay on the Dunsborough foreshore. Working alongside her husband, sculptor Wayne Smith, forms an integral part of Julie's artistic journey. They provide mutual inspiration and practical assistance in the design and creation of their artworks. Julie occasionally contributes to the design of Wayne's sculptures and lends a hand with the heavier aspects (lifting heavy things!) of their creation. In turn, Wayne crafts steel plinths for various felt and ceramic sculptures and offers an invaluable, unbiased perspective when an artwork encounters creative challenges. This collaborative spirit enriches their individual practices and strengthens their shared artistic vision.
