I make figurative mosaics for commission and as creative outlet with mostly nature inspired subject matter.
My chosen medium of ceramic tiles tends to a contemporary approach borrowing from stained glass design more than traditional andamento due mainly to tiles ability to be shaped into varying scale and form and the requirement to grout them.
Tiles are largely salvaged currently and though I do have some commercially obtained material in stock, creating from recycled materials sits well with me.
I employ a "double indirect method" which involves laying out the design loosely, surface mounting it then flipping it upside down to be fixed from the back before turning right side up to remove the surface mount and apply grout, this allows me to achieve a relatively flat surface despite using tiles of varying thickness.
It is a combination of process and the pursuit of creating something visually pleasing from ordinary materials that is a mostly enjoyable pursuit that drives me.
