My ceramics practice began more than forty-five years ago and, after many years devoted to drawing, textiles, oil and encaustic painting, I have now returned to clay with renewed enthusiasm, curiosity and experience. This return has allowed earlier skills to merge with new products and procedures and decades of visual exploration, shaping a body of work that moves between the decorative, the functional, and the sculptural.
Clay offers a direct and tactile way of thinking. Forms often begin with practical intentions—a vessel, bowl, or object for daily use—but evolve through surface treatment, colour, and texture. My background in drawing and painting informs how I approach line, composition, and mark-making on ceramic surfaces.
I am also interested in the dialogue between materials. At times I incorporate textiles with ceramics, bringing together the softness and flexibility of fibre with the solidity of fired clay. These combinations create contrasts in texture and form while reflecting long traditions of hand-crafted making.
Through this work I explore the meeting point between art and utility, where everyday objects can carry visual expression, a story and touch.
