Penelope lives and works as a practising artist in Margaret River influenced by the diversity of her environment. Her paintings are composed of textured fabrics, handmade papers, hand stitches and acrylic paint, exploring impressions of beauty and the study of light in nature. Colour plays an essential role in her work reflecting an emotional response to what she observes in her surroundings. Her collage paintings are sculptured and layered creating a textured three-dimensional surface and have kept evolving over time.
Her concept of garden and landscape are imaginary impressions of what she views in a diverse range of environments that imbue a sense of timelessness. Various qualities of texture incorporated in her work are depicted as free-flowing thread, torn fabric, and embossed materials, that dance and weave across her fine and delicate artworks. Many fabrics and papers she incorporates in her work have been collected and recycled to create textural finishes which are rich in colour and vibrancy enhanced by applications of acrylic paint.
Penelope grew up in Perth’s hills and considered that her observations of the environment provided beauty wherever she looked. Her creative appreciation has been influenced by her pleasant surroundings as a child. She has always been surrounded by trees, creeks, beautiful flowers and her mother’s flowering garden.
As we grow older we realise we have been given visual privileges which have accumulated in our memories over our lifetime. Joy is found as a luxury to be able to express oneself in what has enticed me to create. Penny has been involved in many solo and group exhibitions and has lectured on visual art for adults and children. Her artworks have been collected worldwide
